Somnath Kakade started making tabla at an early age of 14, when he used to miss his school to run to his uncle’s Tabla making workshop, where Somnath took his first lessons in tabla making. Realizing his nephew’s keen interest and ardent adoration for tabla his uncle, Jeevan Vasant Kakade allowed Somnath to make Tablas independently.
When Jeevan Kakade was suffering from illness and could not attend the shop, he put complete responsibility of the workshop on Somnath without any reserves because he knew that this boy had a God gift and a rare sense of choosing the right kind of skin for making the instrument, an acute sense of sound and willingness to work hard.
After a few years, Somnath Kakade started his own Tabla Making workshop, situated in Pune. Talking about his early assignments Somnath says that he is thankful to God that he happened to cross path with great Tabla Meastro Pandit Sureshji Talwalkar, who saw Somnath’s work and asked him to customize his Tabla. Somnath recollects, “Pandit ji used to demand for tablas with various peculiarities and sounds and I used to make it for him. This brought out the best in me. Panditji was very happy with my work.”
Somnath has made Tablas for great artists like… Pandit Sureshji Talwalkar | Ustad Zakir Hussain | Pandit Anindo Chatterjee | Pandit Yogesh Samshi and received their blessings.
